Why I Started Topload Brands,

Topload Brands is my personal space for exploring the art and science of marketing and brand building.

It’s not an agency, and I’m not here to sell you services — this is simply where I share ideas, thoughts, stories, and reflections drawn from all sorts of areas over the course of my working career.

I believe great ideas are born where curiosity meets courage. The best strategies aren’t one-size-fits-all — they’re shaped by evidence, tailored to context, and brought to life with creativity.

My Journey.

I’m David (or Dave), and I created Topload Brands during a time when my body faced a few limitations, but my mind was hungry for challenge and connection.

Writing became my outlet — a way to apply rational thinking to a world that often seemed to reject it.

Over time, I returned to the topics I care about most: how brands grow, adapt, and connect with people in meaningful ways.

My background is unconventional, I’ve worked as a consultant, served as a Business Development Manager in fiercely competitive industries (a long time ago now), and learned much of what I know by being thrown in at the deep end.

Along the way, I’ve completed training in areas like business excellence, conflict resolution, the three pillars of TPM, safety auditing, and various approaches to problem-solving.

But the real lessons came from experience — that’s where the rubber hits the road: navigating challenges, adapting quickly, and finding creative solutions under pressure.

My Business Development History.

My passion for marketing and brand building started when I led business development a small to medium size services company over a 5 year period.

Although smallish in size, there was nothing small about our ambitions.

My role spanned the full growth cycle, from promoting the brand and generating opportunities, to sourcing the right people, securing contracts and ensuring smooth delivery for every client.

I began by building the company’s profile through targeted marketing, networking, and brand storytelling that positioned us as a trusted business for the specialties we offered.

I then moved into opportunity creation, reaching out to prospective clients, understanding their needs, and crafting tailored proposals.

Alongside this, I managed the critical task of resourcing, matching projects to our own team or recruiting new talent when needed.

Once contracts were won, I played a handson role in onboarding and support, helping our people settle into client environments, smoothing transitions, and maintaining close contact with both sides to ensure satisfaction and plant the seeds for future work.

Midway through my time there, the owners established a second venture and I took on the same responsibilities there, effectively running business development for two companies simultaneously.

For three years, I balanced dual client portfolios, recruitment pipelines, and delivery oversight, quite possibly the hardest I have ever worked in my life.

In both companies, business development was never just about sales. It was about creating a cycle of trust, delivery, and growth — building relationships that lasted and turning every success into the foundation for the next.

My passion for marketing has never diminished.
